Continuing to lead the way with Hybrid TV, Entone, Inc. is teaming with BTC Broadband to explore a new Broadband TV (BBTV) service model in Bixby, Oklahoma.

With FusionTV, BTC Broadband can offer a new BBTV service that combines live Over the Air (OTA) television programs and full digital video recorder (DVR) capabilities, with additional cloud-based media services that includes VUDU’s streaming library of over 50,000 titles and more than 50 popular online applications, such as photo sharing from Flickr and Picasa, and social media via Facebook and Twitter.

“Our FTTH deployment is a key technological differentiator for our services,” said Scott Floyd, Director of Sales, Product Development & Customer Services at BTC Broadband. “With a product like Entone’s FusionTV, we can leverage our high-speed network to bring next-generation, broadband-centric services to market while also increasing our overall customer satisfaction with a rich and compelling TV service.”

Entone’s FusionTV solution is a turn-key managed platform that includes software, equipment and service. FusionTV combines traditional TV service with OTT services and is delivered as an operator-branded offering. FusionTV allows operators to roll out a unique video-centric broadband service that can increase the average revenue per user (ARPU) and strengthen subscriber satisfaction, all without the upfront capital investment and content acquisition complexities of a full scale IPTV system.

“Operators are realizing that broadband is the anchor platform for delivering new revenue-generating services,” said Andrew Morton, Vice President of Broadband TV Solutions at Entone. “BBTV is the proverbial win-win. FusionTV is enabled by Entone’s 300 and 400 series of hybrid devices which integrates Broadcom’s advanced dual-core processor – providing a flexible platform for supporting an array of advanced video and hybrid TV applications.

As the holidays quickly approach, so does the season for generosity.  In the spirit of giving back to the community, Citizen Space has launched a food drive to benefit San Francisco Food Bank, a community non-profit dedicated to feeding the hungry.

Hunger manifests itself as a consistent lack of enough food to meet nutritional requirements. It can mean fewer meals each day and poor-quality food that is calorie-rich but nutrient-poor.

In San Francisco, 197,000 people struggle each day to feed themselves and their families. In Marin, just over 40,000 people – or 16% of the population – face the threat of hunger on a given day.

Citizen Space will be collecting canned food goods at our SF  & San Jose locations from now through the end of the year.  To reward all for participating in the food drive, we are offering 50% off of or regular drop-in rate for every person who donates five or more canned food items for the drive!

Citizen Space is also reaching out to other coworking establishments in San Francisco to build an all-star community of donors, with hopes of feeding more hungry people this holiday season.  Interested in contributing? E-mail Matt to join our team!

Citizen Space is the world’s first coworking space located at 425 2nd Street, in the SoMa district of San Francisco.  The idea of Citizen Space is to take the best elements of a coffee shop (social, energetic, creative) and the best elements of a workspace (productive, functional) and combine them to give indie workers the chance to have their own, affordable space. Citizen Space was built on coworking philosophy. Our residents (past and present) range from: software engineers, web developers, social media consultants/strategists, graphic designers, product designers, public relations specialists, and sustainable web hosting entrepreneurs.

Working from home can seem incredibly isolating, especially if the work requires little to no contact with the outside world. Technology has been a blessing by offering telecommunication tools to the workplace, which enable us to work outside of the office at the expense of losing something – namely our colleagues – when we leave. When we lose our coworkers, we stop sharing skills; we rely upon ourselves and ultimately limiting ourselves. Through isolation, we miss out on that intangible collaborative energy found only in coworking spaces like Citizen Space.

Not all coworking spaces focus on industry, professionals, or any other type of identity (for that matter). The best thing about coworking spaces is that they are micro-environments – communities formed by the individual and unique people sharing the same productive space. The synergy of everyone working together – bouncing ideas off of one another, sharing contacts, brainstorming, critiquing – can elevate your own ambitions and potential to levels you couldn’t achieve on your own.

All you need to get started is your computer, a smart phone, and all the chargers of course. Citizen Space provides the desks, monitors, whiteboards, internet, snacks, caffeine, and people.

Citizen Space has launched a new website! We’re aiming to make it easier to keep tabs on one of the coolest coworking spaces around. A few of the new features you’ll notice: easy upcoming events list, twitter feed, links to facebook, rss, plus the option to sign up for email newsletters (if that’s how you roll).

The web design project was a collaboration between a handful of volunteers and myself (who was general manager at the time). I’d like to personally thank:

• Madelin Woods, (graphic designer, css goddess, and WordPress maven) who saved this project and pushed it forward with a few Satur-all-day coworking sessions
• Thomas Knoll (initial WordPress pro)
• Ross Chapman (another WordPress pro)
• Jason Whalen (providing some astute design feedback and suggestions)
• Ivan Storck of Sustainable Websites who helped with last minute WordPress back end issues

We’ve been quiet for awhile now in the blogosphere, but have been active in other areas. It’s been almost a year now we’ve been in the new space. Currently about 15 full-time residents, plus the always welcome and interesting array of Drop-Ins. I started working here part-time last June, and every day am amazed and grateful for the hard work people put in to make this space successful.

In the next few weeks our new web-site will go live, with easier to access information and new photographs of the space. And February and March promise some exciting events. Next week is Social Media Week San Francisco! Chris Heuer/Social Media Club have been working their tails off to organize this event. More info about that and the morning event on the “State of Coworking Today” shortly…

Tara blogged about some exciting changes underway at Citizen Space, most notably a move from the 1500 ft² space on the third floor to a 3500 ft² space on the first, giving us much better access to the street and providing ample room for larger events and more coworkers.

The transition to this space will take place over the next several months, with the move-in date right around March 1.

This transition also marks a change in management and ownership at Citizen Space. The new space will be wholly run and jointly owned by Tara, Elisabeth Norris and Hillary Hartley.

Personally, I’m thrilled to see how much Citizen Space has grown, and how much coworking as a movement has evolved (and continues to accelerate its spread) since I blogged about the idea just over three years ago. The community owes its success to its inclusivity and diversity, and to the caliber of the people who contribute to its culture, and with that in mind, I’m even more confident about the future of Citizen Space as I move on to my next venture.

For now, Citizen Space tenants will be the first recipients of mugs — and a number will replace our janky IKEA mugs that had been serving us in the conversation room. The rest well… would be perfect additions to coworking spaces around the world!

Paul Campbell from Ireland stopped into Citizen Space this past week on a fact-finding mission for CoworkingIreland. Here are his thoughts:

So I stopped into Citzen Space in San Francisco yesterday and I’m coming to the end of my second official day co-working, right where it all began. Chris Messina and Tara Hunt are the remaining occupiers of the office, but the place has been teeming the past two days.

I arrived in and after about 2 minutes of awkwardness I was at a desk, plugged in and good to go. I was more awkward that nobody actually acknowledged my presence – as though they were used to people walking in – and they are!

And so it’s pretty much exactly as you would expect. A couple of regulars, a couple of bedouins and an atmosphere that encourages collaboration and playtime, as well as serious business.

Antoin raised a few issues recently about the viability of co-working, and I got a chance to quiz Chris on some of them. From talking to him I got the impression that it’s important that there’s a ‘home team’ – Citizen Agency are such for Citizen Space and they handle the lease and deal with the landlord. Indeed, it’s important to have the landlord on your side – I feel, however, that co-working is actually an attractive proposition for a landlord – the ‘home team’ will generally be subsidised by the regular deskers and there’s generally a really good atmosphere.

Antoin also raised the point of office conflicts and deskers being protective of their business dealings and projects. Chris’s response to this is: deal with it, or go somewhere else. While I was there, several of the regular deskers were on calls, winning deals on large contracts for their businesses. There was a spirit of comradery and good will, rather than secrecy and remorse.

Regarding actually getting work done, there were often long periods in the office where banter would be high – I noticed Chris had a set of Shure EC3 headphones – headphones were donned by anyone who wanted to get some serious work done, including myself.

All in all, the experience and advice that I received was extremely rewarding. Citizen Space is right in there between the coffee shop and the conventional office, with all the good will and social activity of BarCamp to boot. I’m really pepped and looking forward to some good meetings next week to try and get a space off the ground in Dublin.
